Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced that the South Africa-based retail business firm Pick n Pay has switched its entire on-premises information technology infrastructure to AWS.

The transfer of Pick n Pay’s on-premises SAP environment to AWS and the implementation of a modern SAP HANA platform is enabled by Lemongrass Consulting, which is an AWS premier consulting partner with migration and SAP consulting competencies.

The sub-Saharan African retailer is expected to streamline operations, modernise the supply chain network for its stores, create new digital customer experiences in omnichannel grocery, and expand into new business sectors by migrating to the cloud.

Pick n Pay chief information and technology officer Chris Shortt said: “Leveraging the cloud to achieve greater operational efficiency and improved customer experiences is a game-changing strategy for Pick n Pay and the South African retail sector.

“The cloud will help us stay relevant and accessible in a high-volume, low-margin marketplace that demands efficiency above all else. In addition, the new cloud-based business intelligence platform enables us to make even more data-driven decisions that can help us deliver lower prices and more value to our customers.”

Lemongrass is said to offer the highest levels of automation and agility for moving mission-critical SAP and non-SAP workloads to AWS.

The cloud services offered by AWS include databases, business intelligence, analytics, compute and storage.

The retailer will leverage AWS Marketplace to automate its operations, deliver real-time insights, and identify and purchase AWS Partner Network (APN) offerings.

Pick n Pay expects to better the customer experience for in-person and online shopping by analysing data in the cloud to forecast demand, identify customer patterns, and gauge customer sentiment.

The new SAP environment will run on AWS to support the firm’s online and offline sales channels, accessing tools like machine learning and analytics to streamline its supply chain network, forecast inventory, and carry out in-depth market analysis to provide the ideal retail mix of goods.

Amazon Web Services country manager of South Africa Chris Erasmus said: “We are seeing a fundamental change in how consumer goods companies run their technology infrastructures.

“Pick n Pay is the first South African retailer to join the thousands of customers that run SAP on AWS, using AWS’s reliable and scalable global infrastructure and proven SAP experience to provide key insights, drive innovation, and support the creation of new products and services.”
