Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment (MLSE), a Canada-based professional sports company, has entered into a partnership with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to transform experiences for Canadian sports fans.

The two parties will jointly innovate with an aim to change how Canadian sports franchises such as Toronto Maple Leafs, Toronto Football Club (FC), Toronto Raptors, and Toronto Argonauts create and deliver sports moments and improved fan engagement.

AWS has been selected by MLSE as its official cloud provider as well as official provider of artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and deep learning cloud services.

AWS sales and marketing senior vice president Matt Garman said: “AWS supports many of the world’s most exciting sports organizations with the most comprehensive and broadly adopted cloud offerings.

“We help organisations like Formula 1 to redesign their cars, the National Football League to train their players, and the National Hockey League to pull fans deeper into the game with a growing roster of real-time stats.”

MLSE will leverage AWS’s portfolio of cloud capabilities such as ML, compute, advanced analytics, database, and storage services for supporting their teams and business lines.

Through the partnership with AWS, the Canadian firm will develop solutions to support how teams play, how players maintain their health, how sports franchises function internally, and how fans connect with each other and experience matches.

According to AWS, MLSE will try to offer new AWS-powered insights to its teams to further enhance the calibre of gameplay.

The Canadian firm will use Amazon Rekognition for automated image and video analysis and Amazon Kinesis for collecting, processing, and analysing data and video streams in real time.

The company will be able to process and analyse videos captured from cameras at team training facilities and game venues in real time to better prepare for important decisions during games.

MLSE chief technology and digital officer Humza Teherany said: “With AWS’s advanced machine learning and analytics services, we can use data with our teams to help inform areas such as: team selection, training and strategy to deliver an even higher calibre of competition.

“Taking a cloud-first approach to innovation with AWS further empowers our organisation to experiment with new ideas that can help our teams perform their very best and our fans feel a closer connection to the action.”

Recently, AWS said that it plans to open new AWS Local Zones in 32 new metropolitan areas across 26 countries over the next two years.
