The US Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) has awarded an indefinite delivery, indefinite quantity (IDIQ) contract extension worth up to $325m worth to US-based communications company Viasat.

The IDIQ contract for a period of five years is an extension of a $350m IDIQ contract won by Viasat in 2017 from the USSOCOM. Under the IDIQ contract extension, the communications firm will continue to deliver advanced mission equipment and services to the unified combatant command.

Besides, Viasat is expected to assist the USSOCOM to maintain and enhance integration, terrestrial networking, situational awareness, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR), information assurance, tactical satellite communications, and network management capabilities.

Viasat government systems president Craig Miller said: “This contract award reaffirms Viasat’s deep commitment and partnership with the SOCOM community to understand and address the capability needs of forces for the most complex missions.

“Networking and communications needs across the modern battlespace are continually evolving and we’re excited to help SOCOM maintain the advantage with solutions that deliver the performance, flexibility and resilience Special Operations Forces require to successfully operate independently and interoperate effectively with joint forces.”

According to the communications company, the IDIQ contract vehicle is flexible to enable evolution and adaptation needed to shift with quick technological advancements and the dynamic mission requirements of USSOCOM units.

This flexible framework is crucial to allow new concepts of operation (CONOPS) and accomplishing desired mission outcomes through quickly deployed technologies, systems and services, said Viasat.

In November 2021, Viasat agreed to acquire British mobile satellite communications services provider Inmarsat in a stock cum cash deal worth $7.3bn.
