Microsoft had made an investment of $1.5bn in UAE-based artificial intelligence (AI) technology holding company G42 to expedite AI development and global expansion.

Both companies aim to bring the latest Microsoft AI technologies and skilling initiatives to the UAE and other countries through the commitment.

According to Microsoft, the expanded collaboration will empower institutions of all sizes in emerging markets to harness the benefits of AI and cloud technology, while ensuring they adopt AI solutions that adhere to rigorous standards in safety and security.

G42 will operate its AI applications and services on Microsoft Azure. The AI technology holding company will also collaborate to offer advanced AI solutions to global public sector clients and large enterprises.

Both parties will work together to provide countries in the Middle East, Central Asia, and Africa with advanced AI and digital infrastructure.

Besides, the collaboration will facilitate the development of a skilled and diverse AI workforce and talent pool to power innovation and competitiveness for the UAE and the broader region.

G42 chairman Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan said: “Microsoft’s investment in G42 marks a pivotal moment in our company’s journey of growth and innovation, signifying a strategic alignment of vision and execution between the two organisations.

“This partnership is a testament to the shared values and aspirations for progress, fostering greater cooperation and synergy globally.”

Microsoft and G42 will also support the establishment of a $1bn fund for developers.

Furthermore, the companies will work closely and advance the security and compliance framework of their joint international infrastructure.

As part of the expanded collaboration, Microsoft vice chair and president Brad Smith will join the board of directors of G42.

Smith said: “Our two companies will work together not only in the UAE, but to bring AI and digital infrastructure and services to underserved nations.

“We will combine world-class technology with world-leading standards for safe, trusted, and responsible AI, in close coordination with the governments of both the UAE and the United States.”
