Italian technology firm Leonardo signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Siemens Digital Industries to offer advanced cybersecurity solutions for information technology/operational technology (IT/OT) in the energy, oil and gas and industrial sectors.

The MoU has come within a partnership between the two companies to combine specific development skills of services and solutions that are aimed at protecting the IT/OT infrastructure of industrial sites.

According to Leonardo, the key area of intervention will be the resilience of automation and connectivity systems, which monitor the assets, machinery, and operations of critical infrastructures, against accidents and cyberattacks.

The Italian cyber and security solutions company stated that the MoU offers an integrated commercial proposal that addresses the demands of the oil and gas, energy, and industrial industries by utilising the companies’ patented goods and services.

The developed technological solutions will be integrated with Siemens’ open digital platform Xcelerator, which offers a full range of hardware, software, and digital services enabled for the internet of things (IoT).

Siemens Digital Industries head Giuliano Busetto said: “Together with Leonardo, we combine their undoubted ability to integrate systems with our technology, creating a unique synergy and proposal to the market.”

The partnership is expected to enable complete protection. It will range from threat intelligence to the detection of cyber threats to OT infrastructures and to their protection with attack monitoring and management services.

Leonardo’s CEO Alessandro Profumo said: “Thanks to this agreement, Leonardo and Siemens can create new synergies based on complementary technologies and skills, with the aim of jointly developing solutions capable of responding more effectively to the growing cybernetic challenges in the industrial and energy sector.

“In this regard, Leonardo’s evolutionary path traced to the Be Tomorrow 2030 strategic plan continues, the aims of which are to make our company the cornerstone of a technological ecosystem capable of protecting the safety of citizens and promoting, together with institutions and partners, the country’s long-term competitiveness.”
