Disney Studios StudioLAB and T-Mobile have entered into a five-year innovation partnership to help the latter build advanced storytelling capabilities by using 5G.

T-Mobile will work together with StudioLAB on new approaches to enhance content production and evaluate new types of immersive experiences for consumers by using its 5G network in the US.

T-Mobile technology president Neville Ray said: “Disney has been at the heart of storytelling for generations, making magic that inspires us to dream big and see the world in new ways, and that’s why the T-Mobile team is excited they chose to work with us on 5G innovation.

“Together, we will use our leading 5G network to spark new innovations aimed at transforming how entertainment can be produced and experienced.”

The partners intend to study emerging technologies like mixed reality, virtual presence, and immersive experiences for consumers. Apart from that, the duo plans to use Ultra Capacity 5G for evaluating new, more efficient methods for capturing, producing, and distributing content from inside a studio and from remote locations as well.

As an example, the partners could explore using wireless technology that allows executives irrespective of their location to scout a remote movie site.

Other innovations planned by the duo could be improving the manner in which video content is transferred in real time from remote locations to the cloud with the help of T-Mobile’s 5G network.

Walt Disney Studios chief technology officer Jamie Voris said: “We’re just getting started and the possibilities are endless for how 5G can infuse new magic into the entertainment business.

“Partnering with T-Mobile opens up incredible opportunities to use 5G to radically change many aspects of the industry from content production to the creation of new consumer experiences.”

In December 2021, StudioLAB extended its partnership with Accenture to develop and trial interactive movie posters to offer engaging and immersive experiences to fans.
