Digital communications technology conglomerate Cisco Systems has announced its plans to begin manufacturing in India.

The US-based conglomerate expects to serve the rising demand from customers in India and drive over $1bn in combined domestic production and exports in the next few years with the latest investment.

Cisco’s move to start production in India is part of its strategy to develop an even more diverse and robust supply chain worldwide and contribute to the country’s goal of becoming a global manufacturing hub.

The manufacturing facility in India is expected to develop the company’s advanced technology, which is created to offer flexible, cost-effective delivery of next-generation services and applications.

Besides, the technology is also expected to facilitate complex cloud computing environments.

Cisco chair and CEO Chuck Robbins said: “Today, we are announcing strategic investments in Indian manufacturing capabilities as the next step in delivering cutting-edge technologies to our customers in India and across the globe.

“Fuelled by a rapidly developing digital economy, India is a focal point of innovation and business for Cisco, and we remain deeply committed to our partnerships here.”

Currently, Cisco is establishing core manufacturing capabilities in India, including testing, development and logistics, and extending in-house repair operations.

The new facility is expected to support supply chain resiliency, lower lead times, and enhance the customer experience as well as add further momentum to the local economy.

Cisco said India is its second largest research and development (R&D) centre outside the US.

In March 2023, Cisco announced its intent to acquire Israel-based cloud security software company Lightspin Technologies for an undisclosed price.
