Barclays has selected the HPE GreenLake edge-to-cloud platform of Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) for driving its hybrid multi-cloud strategy and digital transformation across its global businesses.

Under the strategic cloud partnership, HPE GreenLake will deliver a global private cloud platform to the UK-based banking group.

According to HPE, the automated and open cloud platform will be hosting thousands of workloads and help Barclays serve its customers with an improved personalised banking experience.

The HPE GreenLake platform is expected to offer a unified on-premises cloud experience. Its capacity will be available on-demand, while the pricing for compute, memory and storage resources will be based on granular consumption, said HPE.

Barclays group chief information officer Craig Bright said: “Today our customers expect an intelligent, contextual and personalised digital experience with seamless performance. With HPE GreenLake we’re building a cloud platform that will enable the agility and operational performance needed to achieve this ambition while providing a modern economic model for private cloud.”

HPE said that the British banking group is using HPE GreenLake Central to handle costs, utilisation, security and compliance across the entire private cloud estate via a unified global dashboard. With HPE managing the infrastructure environment, constant uptime, regular patching and updates along with automation-driven infrastructure optimisation are said to be ensured for the bank.

The global private cloud platform of Barclays is expected to host thousands of apps and more than 100,000 workloads that will include virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI), Windows server, Linux, and SQL databases.

HPE said that shift from the legacy infrastructure to the private cloud is being carried out by HPE Pointnext Services in partnership with the bank’s team.

HPE senior vice president and UK, Ireland, Middle East and South Africa managing director Marc Waters said: “Banking systems are critical national infrastructure. Resilience, sustainability and security of the underlying technology platform are the non-negotiable fundamentals that enable the provision of personalised digital experiences.

“Given Barclays’ prominence as a UK headquartered global financial services leader, we are immensely proud to be chosen to provide their private cloud. Our fully-managed HPE GreenLake platform provides infrastructure, software and services that enable automation, control, flexibility, exceptional experience and a positive commercial advantage.”

In September this year, HPE added new cloud services to the HPE GreenLake platform, which include HPE GreenLake for analytics, HPE Edge-to-Cloud Adoption Framework and automation tools, and HPE GreenLake for data protection.
