Microsoft has revealed its plans to invest $1.7bn in Indonesia over the next four years to advance artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud infrastructure in the Southeast Asian country.

The American technology company’s commitment also comprises AI skilling opportunities for 840,000 people as well as support for Indonesia’s expanding developer community.

Microsoft’s initiatives are expected to contribute towards realising the Indonesian government’s Golden Indonesia 2045 Vision which is designed to elevate the country as a global economic force.

Indonesia Minister of Communications and Information Technology Budi Arie Setiadi said: “Indonesia’s collaboration with Microsoft on AI perfectly aligns with our ambition for a future driven by digital innovation.

“I am confident this partnership will open up new horizons for Indonesia, positioning us not only as consumers of technology but as pivotal contributors to the global technological supply chain.”

The investment in digital infrastructure expands on Microsoft’s Empower Indonesia (Berdayakan Indonesia) initiative, introduced in February 2021.

Empower Indonesia, which aims to propel inclusive economic growth, encompasses plans to establish the company’s first datacentre region in the country.

Microsoft’s commitment is also expected to enable it to address the rising demand for cloud computing services in Indonesia.

It will also support Indonesia to capitalise on key economic and productivity opportunities presented by the latest AI technology.

Microsoft chairman and CEO Satya Nadella said: “This new generation of AI is reshaping how people live and work everywhere, including in Indonesia.

“The investments we are announcing today – spanning digital infrastructure, skilling, and support for developers – will help Indonesia thrive in this new era.”

Earlier this month, Microsoft made an investment of $1.5bn in UAE-based AI technology holding company G42 to expedite AI development and global expansion.
