Swiss technology company ABB has partnered with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to develop solutions for digitally integrated all-electric operations in mining.

The partnership is aimed at speeding up the adoption of new and sustainable technologies in mining for net-zero emissions.

As part of the collaboration, integration of ABB Ability Operations Management System (OMS) with MEDATech’s cloud data collection system was done on AWS.

The demonstration also included real-time transmission of telemetry data, consisting of battery state and speed of charge, from MEDATech’s first-ever 100 per cent electric haul truck, by pairing with ABB’s fast-charging pilot solution, ABB Ability eMine FastCharge.

AWS’s Internet of Things (IoT) services were used to ensure the security of data while it is transferred.

The collected data was used to conduct real-time production optimisation for test purposes in the demonstration.

AWS global ISV alliances director Flemming Kongsberg said: “In the course of the digital transformation and decarbonisation in the industrial sector, customers are looking for end-to-end integrated solutions to optimize their operations.

“Together, ABB, MEDATech and AWS have demonstrated a fully integrated solution for mining operators to combine data from electric vehicles and operations to maximise their efficiency and contribute to their sustainability goals.

“Through this collaboration, we are excited to help deliver this solution to our customers worldwide, providing flexibility, scalability and security in the cloud.”

By continuing the collection and analysis of the vehicle data during truck testing, ABB, MEDATech and AWS aim to implement the system in a real mine environment.

As part of the partnership, ABB and AWS also intend to demonstrate scalability to meet the operational demands.

For scalability, AWS allows OMS to ingest, store, process, and analyse operational data from stationary and mobile equipment.

To simplify the integration for its mining customers, ABB leverages AWS that eliminates management and investment responsibilities associated with on-premises infrastructure.
