Romanian freight rail operator E-P Rail has selected Swiss IoT company Nexxiot to offer cloud-based data analytics services for its fleet of locomotives and railcars.

As part of the partnership, the Swiss firm will start deployment of its onboard sensor technology over the coming months, allowing E-P Rail to provide the latest services for its customers via AI-powered analytics.

The new collaboration will help both companies to advance the concept of ‘TradeTech’ into Eastern Europe.

It is aimed at enabling global asset and cargo transparency and opening the door for the development of new business models.

E-P Rail is engaged in developing the latest technology to drive its growth leveraging the new data-driven tools.

It has also designed its own mobile apps for critical process management and to create transparency and accountability around its operations.

E-P Rail owner Radu Gabriel Gheorghiu said: “We seek out and integrate the very best solutions for our cargo customers so they feel secure and can always find the right cargo transport for their specific needs, whatever their requirements may be.

“We believe strongly in digital technologies and want to remain at the forefront of our sector by driving innovation. Nexxiot’s sensor gateways, cloud-based software and analytics will help us to achieve our current mission objectives.”

As part of the partnership, Nexxiot will provide about 1,100 gateway devices, known as Globehoppers, to the Romanian company in the coming months to digitise the entire railcar fleet.

E-P Rail will also benefit from Nexxiot’s software that sorts, cleans and analyses data.

The logistics cloud of Nexxiot processes big data collected leveraging machine learning and algorithms. This will help E-P Rail to improve its operational performance and create new services. The new cargo services for the end customer will be operational next year.

Nexxiot CEO Stefan Kalmund said: “It is an exciting moment for both companies. Nexxiot has evolved rapidly from an innovative young IoT company to an industry leader in TradeTech.

“With deep analytics to process and extract meaning and value from Big Data using algorithms and the latest machine learning techniques.”
