Chip-maker Qualcomm Technologies has collaborated with Google Cloud to develop neural network solutions and advance mobile artificial intelligence (AI) models.

The two companies will partner on Neural Architecture Search (NAS) to allow the companies to create and optimise AI models automatically.

The partnership will see the availability of Google Cloud Vertex AI NAS on Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 mobile platform initially.

Later, it will be made available across Qualcomm’s portfolio.

By utilising Google Cloud Vertex AI NAS with the Qualcomm AI Engine, the partnership is expected to speed up neural network development and differentiation for Snapdragon mobile, ACPC, and XR platforms, Snapdragon Ride Platform, and IoT platforms.

Google Cloud cloud AI and industry solutions vice president June Yang said: “Google Cloud’s Vertex AI NAS will give Qualcomm Technologies the ability to bring high accuracy AI with low latency to low-power devices such as IoT, medical imagery, automobile and mobile devices, whilst ensuring memory and energy efficiency.

“With this collaboration, Qualcomm Technologies will now be able to build and optimise new AI models in weeks rather than months and we’re thrilled at the impact this will have on people using Snapdragon-powered devices.”

With the collaboration, Qualcomm is the first system-on-chip (SoC) customer to offer Google Cloud Vertex AI NAS.

For developer access, Google Cloud Vertex AI NAS will be integrated into the Qualcomm Neural Processing SDK.

Qualcomm stated that its platforms utilising the Qualcomm AI Engine will be able to benefit from optimisations and performance increases.

Qualcomm Technologies product management vice president Ziad Asghar said: “The ability to utilise Google’s NAS technology to create and optimise new AI models in a condensed timeframe is a game-changer for our business.

“We are happy to be the first chipset company to work with Google Cloud on NAS and eager to roll out this technology to further our momentum in connecting the intelligent edge.”

Last month, Qualcomm partnered with Japanese IT company NEC to develop a 5G open and virtualised distributed unit (DU).
