Qualcomm Technologies said that it has joined forces with Jacobs and the city of Peachtree Corners in Georgia, US to trial its cellular vehicle-to-everything (C-V2X) technology.

The company will serve as an enabler of ecosystem by offering technology solutions, while Jacobs will be responsible for the installation commission project delivery.

The objective of the programme is to showcase the continued momentum of smart cities and spaces. Peachtree Corners is expected to serve as a model for other municipalities for deploying smart solutions and initiatives.

The city’s Curiosity Lab hosts technology developers and companies to trial smart connected solutions across the community.

Qualcomm will work together with Jacobs and Peachtree Corners to deploy the C-V2X technology with a focus on supporting roadside infrastructure, management of traffic, and road safety.

Peachtree Corners will work with Commsignia to have roadside units (RSUs) equipped with C-V2X solutions from Qualcomm.

Utility vehicles equipped with the C-V2X solutions will also be used for demonstrating vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) direct communications.

Qualcomm business development senior director and smart cities global head Sanjeet Pandit said: “This C-V2X programme with the Curiosity Lab and Jacobs not only highlights the ability to implement digital road infrastructure to optimise traffic and enable safer streets across global cities, but our continued commitment to offer advanced solutions for traffic safety.

“This project is paving the way as an example of what communities can replicate and I expect these advanced end-to-end solutions to be an integral part of future smart city and smart connected spaces rollouts.”

According to Qualcomm, C-V2X direct communication has been designed to serve as the main feature for safety and mobility applications. Apart from that, it helps in facilitating cleaner and sustainable mobility alternatives.

Besides, C-V2X is compatible with 5G networks globally and also complements cameras, radar, and light detection and radar (LIDAR), and other advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) sensors.
