Siemens Mobility and everis have bagged a contract from Spanish national railway company Renfe for developing and operating a mobility as a service (MaaS) platform.

The digital platform to be developed under the five-year contract will integrate multiple types of shared and public transport, including train, metro, bicycle, bus, scooter services, and car sharing.

It will enable passengers easily identify and directly book the most appropriate trip options for their requirements.

Siemens Mobility will offer the core technology for the MaaS system.

On the other hand, everis will be responsible for the system integration. The Spanish consulting firm, which is owned by the NTT DATA Group, will also offer support for the commercial operation, which includes the marketing and legal aspects.

Upon its completion, the intelligent MaaS platform will be available to users in 27 cities, which include Madrid, Barcelona, Bilbao, Valencia, and Sevilla.

Everis NTT DATA mobility, transport and logistics head Pedro Mur said: “For everis NTT DATA it is an authentic pleasure to consolidate our relationship of more than 20 years with Renfe with this strategic MaaS project, which represents a relevant milestone in its transformation process to get along with the new technological and market trends.

“With this objective in mind, we will deploy our design, branding, marketing, commercial, technological and business capabilities to develop this project.”

Renfe hopes the intermodal platform to draw at least 650,000 new customers to train travel, which will grow train ticket sales in the main corridors by 3%-4%.

The Spanish railway company forecasts the new MaaS system and customised passenger experience to generate an additional income of up to €156m in the five years after its implementation.

Siemens Mobility rail infrastructure CEO Andre Rodenbeck said: “We are delighted to have been given the opportunity to accompany Renfe in their aspired transformation from a rail operator to an enabler of seamless door-to-door mobility.

“Our intermodal software platform and digital solutions will help deliver one of the world’s most ambitious MaaS projects, that has the potential to set new benchmarks.”

Earlier this year, Siemens Mobility won a contract for developing a countrywide, intelligent MaaS platform for the Netherlands.
