UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has revealed the government’s plans to set up an artificial intelligence (AI) safety institute in the country to examine the risks and possible harms from the technology.

The announcement was made by Sunak during his speech to the Royal Society, prior to the AI Safety Summit 2023, which is set to take place on the 1 and 2 November 2023 at Bletchley Park, Buckinghamshire.

The new institute is expected to advance the world’s knowledge of AI safety.

Besides, it will thoroughly examine, assess, and test new types of AI to help people understand the capabilities of each new model.

The AI safety institute will also look into all the hazards, encompassing everything from social risks like bias and misinformation to the most severe threats of all.

Sunak said: “The British people should have peace of mind that we’re developing the most advanced protections for AI of any country in the world. Doing what’s right and what’s necessary to keep you safe.”

In April 2023, the Prime Minister and Technology Secretary announced £100m in initial start-up funding for a taskforce, which is responsible for expediting the UK’s capability in fast developing type of AI.

Last month, the UK government selected the University of Bristol to host a £900m new supercomputer research facility to bolster pioneering AI research and innovation in the country.

The new AI Research Resource (AIRR), dubbed Isambard-AI after Isambard Kingdom Brunel, will serve as a national facility to assist researchers and industry experts in maximising the potential of AI.

In a separate announcement, the UN Secretary-General has notified the creation of a new AI advisory body on risks, opportunities, and international governance of AI.

The advisory body will support the international community’s efforts to govern the technology.
