Italian telecommunications firm Gruppo TIM and Google Cloud have announced the launch of the first 5G edge cloud platform that will enable smart mobility in Italy.

The new solution, which is said to be used for safer and faster connections, is activated in the Modena automotive smart area (MASA). It will enable the development of innovative applications dedicated to connected cars, smart mobility and other digital services in multiple areas.

Gruppo TIM said that the 5G edge cloud platform integrates the Google Distributed Cloud Virtual software with its own Telco Cloud infrastructure and 5G mobile network. This is expected to deliver greater flexibility in the configuration of applications, high-performance connectivity, and high security standards to meet privacy requirements.

With the new 5G edge cloud platform, Google Cloud and Gruppo TIM plan to deliver new technological levers to government bodies, enterprises, entrepreneurs, and startups to expedite digital transformation in Italy.

In the Bologna and Modena region, the platform utilises TIM’s 5G network and it will enable MASA and the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia to experiment novel self-driving and assisted vehicle solutions.

It will also help to test out applications for advanced cloud mobility, which demand dynamic and ultra-secure communication between vehicles and the road infrastructure as well as the integration with smart city systems.

The new 5G edge cloud platform is a part of the smart city development initiatives undertaken by TIM Enterprise, a new business unit of the Italian telecommunications firm, in collaboration with TIM Urban Genius.

TIM Urban Genius is said to be a virtual control room that is equipped with digital technologies to provide a sustainable smart city model.

Recently, Gruppo TIM selected Ericsson’s core technology for its 5G standalone network.
