Telefónica, Ericsson, and Qualcomm Technologies have introduced a commercial mobile 5G millimetre (mmWave) network in Spain.

The 5G mmWave network has been launched at Mobile World Congress 2023 (MWC 2023) held in Barcelona.

According to the companies, the launch will enable compatible user devices partners to access the Telefónica 5G mmWave network which is powered by Ericsson during the event.

Besides, Qualcomm Technologies will demonstrate the wide spectrum of 5G mmWave devices around the world that are powered by Snapdragon mobile platforms during Mobile World Congress 2023.

Qualcomm Europe technology vice president Dino Flore said: “We are proud to continue working with industry partners such as Telefonica and Ericsson to push boundaries of connectivity and enable robust consumer experiences.

“Being able to show the first commercial deployment of commercial 5G mmWave services at MWC 2023 Barcelona is an example of another significant milestone for 5G mmWave in Europe.”

The use of 5G mmWave in the area of fixed wireless access, digitalisation, Industry 4.0, and connected vehicles offers extremely high-performance coverage and enables a whole new range of use cases to be explored.

Its use will help in achieving high speeds and high capacity, and in providing the best 5G experience in crowded areas, stated the firms.

Furthermore, the 5G mmWave deployment will enable ultra-fast mobile connectivity for users at lower latencies which is expected to transform the way they experience mobile connectivity.

Using substantial mmWave spectrum bandwidth acquired by Telefónica from the recent Spanish spectrum auction, the 5G mmWave rollout will encompass Hall 3 of the event.

To facilitate the 5G millimetre coverage, Ericsson is offering its high-capacity RAN Processor 6651 and mmWave radio AIR 5322.

Ericsson Iberia networks head Somaya El-Marrakchi said: “Our collaboration with Telefónica and Qualcomm to achieve this 5G mmWave technological leap in Spain will dramatically change the experience of mobile connectivity for consumers and enterprises, making it faster, more accessible and more reliable.

“Millimeter band opens a new paradigm in the deployment of 5G technology, that will provide operators a powerful tool to complement existing network deployment strategy to increase performance and capacity with different needs.”
