Qualcomm Technologies has introduced the Snapdragon W5+ Gen 1 and Snapdragon W5 Gen 1 platforms for the next generation wearables.

The American semiconductor company said that the two platforms are designed for advancing ultra-low power and breakthrough performance for next generation connected wearables. The focus of the platforms is on prolonged battery life, premium user experiences, as well as sleek, innovative designs, said the company.

With the platforms, manufacturers are expected to scale, differentiate, and build products faster in the wearables industry that is growing and segmenting continuously.

Qualcomm said that new improvements to the flagship Snapdragon W5+ platform help in delivering 50% lower power, higher performance by two folds, two times richer features, and 30% smaller size, compared to the previous generation.

The purpose-built platform is based on the hybrid architecture, and is made up of a 4nm-based system-on-chip and highly integrated always-on co-processor that is based on 22nm.

It also comes with various platform innovations such as new ultra-low power Bluetooth 5.3 architecture, low power islands for Wi-Fi, audio, and GNSS, and low power states like Hibernate and Deep Sleep.

Qualcomm senior director, product marketing and smart wearables global head Pankaj Kedia said: “The new wearable platforms – Snapdragon W5+ and Snapdragon W5 – represent our most advanced leap yet. Purpose-built for next generation wearables, these platforms address the most pressing consumer needs by delivering ultra-low power, breakthrough performance, and highly integrated packaging.

“Additionally, we extend our proven hybrid architecture with new low power innovations such as Deep Sleep and Hibernate states delighting consumers with premium user experiences while extending battery life.”

Qualcomm said that Oppo and Mobvoi have announced the first smartwatches based on tits new platforms, with 25 designs to be launched across segments.

OPPO associate vice president, IoT business president Franco Li said: “OPPO and Qualcomm Technologies have closely collaborated for a long time, creating new possibilities of product innovation together.

“The Oppo Watch 3 series will be launched in August. As the first smartwatch powered by Snapdragon W5 wearable platform, it will delight our users with better performance.”

Last month, Qualcomm launched Qualcomm AI Stack, a new unified artificial intelligence (AI) solution, for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and developers for supporting a range of intelligent devices with AI software access and compatibility.
