Nokia has been roped in by Indonesian telecommunications provider Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison (IOH) as the principal vendor for deploying and expanding its 4G and 5G network throughout Indonesia.

Under the three-year deal, Nokia will be providing solutions from its AirScale portfolio. The solutions will be used by the Indonesian firm for an area spanning 1.4 million square kilometres including the islands of Sumatra and Kalimantan, the Central Java province and Surabaya city.

According to Nokia, the project will help Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison in addressing the market needs, enhancing data throughput and customer experience, and preparing the network for early deployments of 5G.

Nokia mobile networks president Tommi Uitto said: “We are looking forward to supporting Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison in this crucial initiative to expand its coverage footprint and prepare the networks for more innovative 5G services in the near future.

“Nokia’s 5G-ready AirScale portfolio will help Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison to launch next-generation services while helping it to bring down its operational expense.”

Nokia expects to begin the rollout of its solutions for the Indonesian company this month.

The Finnish firm will deliver equipment from its ReefShark-powered AirScale portfolio, which include base stations and 5G Single RAN for indoor and outdoor coverage.

Nokia claimed that its consolidation services will help in a seamless integration by combining spectrum owned by Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison into a single network so that the impact to end-users is minimum.

The Finnish firm added that with its technology, the Indonesian company stands to rapidly and easily upgrade to 5G services in a remote manner with either a software update or with a plug-in card.

Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison President, Director, and CEO Vikram Sinha said: “We are excited to collaborate with our long-standing partner Nokia on this crucial project to consolidate and expand our networks for optimal utilisation of our resources while providing a world-class digital experience to our subscribers.

“Nokia’s 5G-ready and industry-leading solution will help us maximize the asset utilisation even as we future-proof our investments and enhance network performance.”

Recently, the Finnish company launched a cloud-native solution dubbed Adaptive Cloud Networking for transforming service provider cloud networks to be consumable, agile, and automated.
