IBM has revealed plans to acquire Randori, a Boston-based attack surface management (ASM) and offensive cybersecurity provider, for an undisclosed price.

Founded in 2018, the hacker-led Randori enables clients in identifying external facing assets continuously, on-premises or in the cloud, that can be seen by attackers. The company helps clients to prioritise exposures which pose the biggest risk.

IBM said that the acquisition will further advance its hybrid cloud strategy and bolster its portfolio of artificial intelligence (AI) powered cybersecurity services and products.

IBM Security general manager Mary O’Brien said: “Our clients today are faced with managing a complex technology landscape of accelerating cyberattacks targeted at applications running across a variety of hybrid cloud environments – from public clouds, private clouds and on-premises.

“In this environment, it is essential for organisations to arm themselves with attacker’s perspective in order to help find their most critical blind spots and focus their efforts on areas that will minimise business disruption and damages to revenue and reputation.”

After closing the acquisition, IBM intends to integrate the attack surface management software of Randori with the capabilities of IBM Security QRadar’s extended detection and response (XDR).

By inputting insights from Randori into QRadar XDR, security teams can make use of real-time attack surface visibility for intelligent alert triage, threat hunting, as well as incident response, said IBM.

The Boston-based firm also provides a solution to businesses that combines attack surface management with continuous automated red teaming (CART). This enables to stress test defenses and incident response teams.

Randori co-founder and CEO Brian Hazzard said: “To stay ahead of today’s threats, you need to know what’s exposed and how attackers view your environment – that’s exactly what Randori provides.

“By joining forces with IBM, we can greatly accelerate this vision and strategy – leveraging IBM’s deep expertise in AI, threat intelligence, offensive security and global reach. Together, we can arm the industry with the attacker’s perspective – helping to give every organisation the visibility and insight needed to get in front of the next wave of attacks.”

Randori marks the fourth acquisition for IBM this year in its efforts to strengthen its hybrid cloud and AI skills and capabilities.

The proposed deal is subject to customary closing conditions and the necessary regulatory reviews.
