Twitter owner Elon Musk revealed his plans to change Twitter’s blue bird symbol to an X through a series of tweets, in a move to rebrand the microblogging and social networking service.

The Tesla and SpaceX owner tweeted: “And soon we shall bid adieu to the twitter brand and, gradually, all the birds.”

X.com was redirected to Twitter.com following Musk’s tweet: “Interim X logo goes live later today.”

The symbol change of the social media platform is expected to be evident soon.

According to media reports, Musk has informed Twitter employees through an email that the company would become X and that it was the last time he would email from a Twitter address.

Twitter CEO Linda Yaccarino tweeted: “It’s an exceptionally rare thing – in life or in business – that you get a second chance to make another big impression.

“Twitter made one massive impression and changed the way we communicate. Now, X will go further, transforming the global town square.”

Earlier this month, Musk announced the formation of a new artificial intelligence (AI) company, dubbed xAI, with a mission to understand the true nature of the universe. The company is reported to have been formed as an alternative to ChatGPT.

Musk completed the $44bn takeover of Twitter in late October 2022. In the following month, Twitter updated its app on Apple’s App Store for iOS devices to roll out a subscription service enabling the app users to purchase blue-tick verification for a monthly fee of $7.99.
