According to Databricks, the combination of its Lakehouse platform with MosaicML’s technology will provide customers with a simple and easy way to maintain control, security, and ownership over their data without high costs
US-based data and artificial intelligence (AI) company Databricks has signed a definitive agreement with generative AI platform MosaicML to acquire the latter in a deal worth about $1.3bn.
Through the combination, both companies aim to make generative AI accessible for all organisations to allow them to develop, own, and secure generative AI models with their own data.
Based in the US, MosaicML has recently introduced the MosaicML pretrained transformer (MPT) large language models to provide a commercially usable and open-source model.
MosaicML supports developers to keep full control over the AI models they develop with model ownership and data privacy built into the platform’s design.
The company’s customers include Generally Intelligent, Allen Institute for AI (AI2), Hippocratic AI, Replit and Scatter Labs.
MosaicML co-founder and CEO Naveen Rao said: “We started MosaicML to solve the hard engineering and research problems necessary to make large scale training more accessible to everyone.
“With the recent generative AI wave, this mission has taken center stage. Together with Databricks, we will tip the scales in the favor of many — and we’ll do it as kindred spirits: researchers turned entrepreneurs sharing a similar mission.”
According to Databricks, the combination of its Lakehouse platform with MosaicML’s technology will provide customers with a simple and easy way to maintain control, security, and ownership over their data without high costs.
Following the closing of the proposed acquisition, MosaicML’s entire team, including its research team, will join Databricks.
Both companies aim to offer better choices to customers in developing their own models, training models with their own unique data and creating differentiating IP for businesses.
Databricks co-founder and CEO Ali Ghodsi said: “Databricks and MosaicML have an incredible opportunity to democratise AI and make the Lakehouse the best place to build generative AI and LLMs.
“Databricks and MosaicML’s shared vision, rooted in transparency and a history of open source contributions, will deliver value to our customers as they navigate the biggest computing revolution of our time.”
The proposed transaction is subject to customary conditions, including any mandated regulatory clearances.
