Intel has unveiled the new 12th Gen Intel Core i9-12900KS desktop processor, which is claimed to deliver a max turbo frequency of up to 5.5 GHz for gamers and content creators.

The special edition processor will be available at retailers around the world starting from 5 April. Its recommended customer price starts at $739, said Intel.

The i9-12900KS processor can be found as a boxed processor and is integrated into systems from Intel’s channel and original equipment (OEM) partners.

Intel said that the new desktop processor has 16 cores, of which eight are performance-cores and eight are efficient-cores. The processor, which has 24 threads, offers 150W processor base power and 30MB Intel Smart Cache to enhance the gaming experience.

Intel gaming, creator and esports segment general manager Marcus Kennedy said: “Intel continues to push the envelope for desktop gaming with the new 12th Gen Intel Core i9-12900KS processor.

“Based on Intel’s 12th Gen performance hybrid architecture, this processor can hit 5.5 GHz on up to two cores for the first time, giving the most extreme gamers the ability to maximise performance.”

The new desktop processor is equipped with the Intel Thermal Velocity Boost technology, which opportunistically ramps up clock frequency by up to 100MHz.

It also features Intel Adaptive Boost technology for enhancing gaming performance by resourcefully enabling higher multi-core turbo frequencies.

Intel said that the new chipset is compatible with existing Z690 motherboards with latest BIOS recommended to get the best experience in gaming.

Earlier this month, the US-based semiconductor major announced an initial investment of over €33bn in the European Union towards research and development and manufacturing.
