American technology major Microsoft has hired OpenAI’s co-founder and former CEO Sam Altman to steer a new advanced AI research team.

The announcement comes after the ChatGPT maker sacked Altman last week.

OpenAI’s co-founder and former president Greg Brockman along with other colleagues have also joined Microsoft to become part of the in-house advanced AI research team.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella posted on X, saying: “We remain committed to our partnership with OpenAI and have confidence in our product roadmap, our ability to continue to innovate with everything we announced at Microsoft Ignite, and in continuing to support our customers and partners.

“We look forward to getting to know Emmett Shear and OAI’s new leadership team and working with them. And we’re extremely excited to share the news that Sam Altman and Greg Brockman, together with colleagues, will be joining Microsoft to lead a new advanced AI research team.”

In response, Altman on X said: “The mission continues.”

OpenAI, which is backed by Microsoft, announced the departure of Altman as the CEO of the company after a deliberative review process undertaken by its board.

The review concluded that he was not consistently sincere in his communications with the board, making it more challenging to carry out its responsibilities.

Twitch former CEO Emmett Shear will serve as the interim CEO of OpenAI. He will take over in the role from OpenAI chief technology officer Mira Murati, who served as the interim CEO of the company.

OpenAI, which was founded in 2015, had recently introduced custom versions of large language model-based chatbot ChatGPT to help users generate tailored versions for specific purposes.
