Malaysia Airlines has selected GE Digital for transforming and modernising its fuel-efficiency programme by deploying the latter’s Fuel Insight and FlightPulse aviation software.

The collaboration with GE Digital is part of the airline’s ongoing initiative to achieve its sustainability targets.

Malaysia Airlines has been running its fuel-efficiency programme for more than 10 years. It is said to have helped the airline achieve a 15% fuel burn improvement over the last eight years.

The airline expects GE Digital technologies to enable efficient and digitally connected operations.

Malaysia Airlines group operations officer Ahmad Luqman Mohd Azmi said: “Advocating sustainability in all of our operations has always been the primary goal for Malaysia Airlines. We look forward to such collaboration that contributes to the airline’s efforts to accelerate our sustainability goals.

“Digitalisation is a core component of our Long Term Business Plan and we have seen how these efforts bring immediate value especially in the area of fuel efficiency.”

GE Digital’s Fuel Insight software is a monitoring solution for costs and emissions. By understanding data collected from the aircraft, the software is said to uncover valuable intelligence that helps boost fuel efficiency and decrease waste.

It uses GE Digital’s Event Measurement System (EMS) aviation data and analytics platform for merging flight data with flight plans, fuel uplift data, and load sheets. By doing these, the software can identify the most attainable fuel savings opportunities, and monitor the incremental savings in the operation.

Flight operators get actionable intelligence at various levels from Fuel Insight, which enables analysts in drilling down macro trends to understand problems on a per-flight level.

On the other hand, FlightPulse provides data directly to pilots to help them visualise their savings over time.

According to GE Digital, pilots who understand their own performance can fine-tune their flight plans to drive maximum safety and fuel efficiency.

Furthermore, sharing of secure benchmarking and data allows crew members to see their contribution to projects and drastically shortens the feedback loop, said the company.

GE Digital will also offer the tools needed for Malaysia Airlines to develop its own big data analytics and utilise modern tools powered by artificial intelligence/machine learning for data analysis.

GE Digital aviation software business general manager Andrew Coleman said: “GE is committed to environmental excellence and that includes ensuring that our customers are empowered to reduce the impact of their technology and environmental footprint within their operations.

“These solutions will help Malaysia Airlines to leverage software to improve efficiency and reduce carbon emissions.”

Recently, GE Digital said that Avelo Airlines has deployed its Electronic Flight Operation Quality Assurance (eFOQA) flight data monitoring and processing solution. The eFOQA solution will help the US ultra-low-cost carrier and its flight operators fully utilise flight data for optimising safety.
