US-based space solutions company Virgin Orbit has extended its collaboration with Arqit Quantum for two new satellites launches.

Two Arqit satellites have already been delivered to Earth orbit by Virgin Orbit’s LauncherOne air-launched system, which will be a key component of Arqit’s Platform-as-a-Service.

The company’s Platform-as-a-Service is designed to ensure the security of the communications links of any networked device against attacks.

The extended partnership is aimed at speeding up space-based encryption services to private, defence, and intelligence customers globally.

Arqit and Virgin Orbit are partnering on responsive space initiatives for the Five Eyes (FVEY) international intelligence alliance that consists of Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the UK, and the US.

In September this year, Arqit revealed the creation of a programme called Federated Quantum System, which is a private instance of its QuantumCloud technology.

Allied defence departments that need sovereign control over mission-critical encryption are allowed to purchase the technology. Arqit will supply ring-fenced dedicated systems for such long-term, high-value subscription contracts.

As part of the collaboration with Virgin Orbit, Arqit has committed to launching additional customer funded systems exclusively with it.

The contract will cover up to five launches, which will be realised as expected government contracts advance to utilise Arqit’s services. The launches will be carried out from Spaceport Cornwall from 2023.

Virgin Orbit CEO Dan Hart said: “I am delighted to advance such a comprehensive collaboration with Arqit. Supporting Arqit’s long term subscription agreements with its defence department customers is important and rewarding business for us.

“Following a year of increased awareness of cyber risks to businesses and governments, we’re excited for the opportunity to provide our customers with the promise that Arqit’s unique QuantumCloud system can keep their mission safe.”

Arqit and Virgin Orbit have also signed an agreement for the QuantumCloud software licence.

Under the licence, Virgin Orbit is allowed to use Arqit’s platform to offer enhanced encryption to secure Virgin Orbit’s global infrastructure.

In August this year, Virgin Orbit agreed to merge with NextGen Acquisition Corp. II (NGCA) in a deal worth $3.2bn.
