Rivian, a US-based electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer, has selected Amazon Web Services (AWS) as its preferred cloud provider to drive efficiency, performance, and refinement of EVs.

The EV manufacturer is backed by AWS’ parent company Amazon.

According to AWS, Rivian will apply its capabilities across the latter’s enterprise, spanning analytics, compute, containers, and machine learning to optimise its business and enhance the performance of its customers’ EVs.

Through the partnership with AWS, the EV maker is expected to improve battery range, driving experience, as well as owner experience. At the same time, the automaker will innovate the technological foundations for the EV fleet management of customers apart from enabling more efficient vehicle charging, said AWS.

The cloud provider said that Rivian is applying the innovations across its vehicle ranges, including customised electric delivery vans (EDVs) for Amazon.

Rivian software development vice president Wassym Bensaid said: “At Rivian, we have created a software-defined vehicle architecture with a technology foundation that powers advanced features such as deep over-the-air software updates to deliver continuous improvements to the vehicles, and the collection of a rich set of real-time vehicle data.

“By leveraging AWS, and building a central data lake to interconnect Rivian’s operations, products, and services, we can enable proactive diagnostics and add intelligence to our vehicles, and then use what we learn to generate synergies and scale efficiencies.”

AWS said that it powers the EV maker’s software-defined vehicle (SDV) architecture as well as over-the-air software updates. Furthermore, Rivian is said to leverage Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service (Amazon EKS) for managing and orchestrating software updates, while Amazon CloudFront is used by it for enabling the deployment of updates at scale.

Additionally, the EV maker uses analytics, storage, database, and security capabilities of AWS to improve agility and visibility across its vertically integrated business model.

Amazon vice president and chief technology officer Werner Vogels said: “Our analytics, machine learning, containers, and customer service capabilities support Rivian’s business model and will help it scale and continuously improve the customer experience as more and more individuals and organisations go electric.

“Powered by the world’s leading cloud, Rivian is reimagining vehicle ownership, operation, and service to usher in a new experience of efficient and enjoyable electric SUVs, trucks, and vans that delight its customers.”

In July this year, Amazon through its Climate Pledge Fund had jointly led a $2.5bn funding round of the EV manufacturer.
