American technology company Nvidia has announced a partnership with Taiwan-based Hon Hai Precision Industry (Foxconn) to build automated and autonomous vehicle platforms.

The Taiwanese electronics manufacturer is expected to be a tier-one producer by manufacturing electronic control units (ECUs) based on Nvidia’s DRIVE Orin system-on-a-chip (SoC) for the global automotive industry.

The electric vehicles (EVs) manufactured by Foxconn will feature DRIVE Hyperion sensors and DRIVE Orin ECUs for highly automated driving capabilities, stated Nvidia.

The automotive-grade DRIVE Orin, which can perform up to 254 trillion operations per second, is designed to manage deep neural networks and a number of applications that operate at the same time in autonomous vehicles.

DRIVE Hyperion is a modular development platform and reference architecture for developing autonomous vehicles.

Together, the two systems are expected to process massive volumes of sensor data in real time for the autonomous vehicles to safely perceive, plan, and act.

Nvidia automotive vice president Rishi Dhall said: “Our partnership with Foxconn will provide OEMs developing intelligent driving solutions with a world-class supplier that can scale for volume manufacturing of the NVIDIA DRIVE Orin platform.

“Foxconn’s decision to also use the DRIVE Hyperion sensor suite for its EVs will help accelerate their path to production without compromising safety, reliability or quality.”

Through the collaboration, Nvidia is expected to scale its efforts and fulfil growing industry demand as more transportation players pick DRIVE Orin for intelligent vehicles.

Foxconn, on the other hand, is expected to accelerate its time-to-market and time-to-cost plans by developing EVs using the DRIVE Hyperion qualified sensor set.

Foxconn software development centre senior director Eric Yeh said: “This strategic cooperation with NVIDIA strengthens the intelligent driving solutions Foxconn will be able to provide. Together, we are enabling the industry to build energy-efficient, automated vehicles.

“This is a well-considered partnership that leverages unique strengths on each side in the pursuit of innovative EV development and opportunities.”

In November 2022, Foxconn along with Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) formed an EV joint venture (JV) brand called Ceer.
