Arrival, a UK-based electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer, is joining forces with Uber to develop EVs for ride-hailing drivers that are affordable and also specifically built for their needs.

Dubbed as Arrival Car, the new type of EV is likely to enter production in the third quarter of 2023.

The Arrival Car is expected to address the global requirement of transitioning ride-hailing and car sharing services to electric for bringing down emissions and in making air quality better in cities.

The partnership is in line with Uber’s pledge to become a 100% electric mobility platform in London by 2025. The ride-hailing giant is targeting all its fleets across North America and Europe to be electric by the end of this decade.

In the coming months, Arrival will work with Uber drivers in the design process of the Arrival Car. The final design for the new vehicle is likely to be unveiled by the end of this year.

Arrival Mobility UK SVP Tom Elvidge said: “Arrival Car will be designed around drivers’ needs to create a vehicle that is affordable, durable and desirable.

“We have a great partnership with UPS to create a best-in-class electric delivery vehicle, and we hope to replicate that success with Uber as we develop the best possible product for ride hailing that elevates the experience of the passenger and improves drivers’ health, safety and finances.”

Two years ago, Uber had launched its Clean Air Plan in London. As part of it, the company has raised over £135m to help drivers in transitioning to a fully electric vehicle.

Uber will now focus on encouraging its drivers to apply for EV assistance under the Clean Air Plan. This is expected to help in cleaning up urban transport, while driving a mass market for EVs, said Arrival.

The ride-hailing company stated: “As we enter the second phase of our plan, and encourage drivers to apply for EV Assistance under the Clean Air Plan, the Clean Air Fee will reduce from 15 pence per mile to 3 pence per mile.”

Recently, Uber launched its Uber Green initiative in London, which enables passengers to opt for a 100% electric vehicle at no extra cost, while drivers pay a lesser service fee.
