Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and Chinese mobility tech company ECARX have entered into a partnership to work together on an immersive digital cockpit in-vehicle computing platform called ECARX digital cockpit for next-generation electric vehicles (EVs).

The partners expect the new in-vehicle computing platform to be in mass production for a global launch in late 2023.

ECARX chairman and CEO Ziyu Shen said: “The global automotive industry is transforming towards an intelligent future at an unprecedented pace with demand for computing power and graphics capabilities rapidly increasing.

“With this collaboration, we will further enable OEMs and tier 1 suppliers to enhance their digital cockpit experiences as they seek to create greater consumer value through intelligent connected cars.”

The ECARX digital cockpit will be equipped with AMD Ryzen Embedded V2000 processors and AMD Radeon RX 6000 Series GPUs apart from using hardware and software from ECARX.

AMD and ECARX aim to bring in an innovative in-car experience by combining the Chinese firm’s experience in automotive digital cockpit design with the former’s advanced computing power and capabilities in visual graphic rendering.

The ECARX digital cockpit will have features such as driver information mode, rear seat entertainment, heads-up display, multi-zone voice recognition, multiple-displays, a full 3D user experience, and high-end gaming.

AMD corporate vice president and embedded business general manager Rajneesh Gaur said: “As car companies seek to deliver immersive experiences and intelligent features for their next-generation electric vehicles, the AMD-powered ECARX digital cockpit will address these needs for the global automotive market.

“We are excited to work with ECARX as our first strategic ecosystem partner in China for the digital cockpit using our Ryzen Embedded V2000 processors and Radeon RX 6000 Series GPUs.”

Founded in 2017, ECARX has been building hardware and software solutions required for developing connected, automated, and electrified mobility. In May 2022, the Chinese mobility tech company signed a merger deal worth $3.82bn with blank cheque company COVA Acquisition in order to go public in the US market.
