Switzerland-based insurance company Zurich Insurance Group has selected Amazon Web Services (AWS) to expedite its digital transformation and offer new customer experiences at scale.

The multi-line insurer, which offers property, casualty, and life insurance solutions worldwide, will migrate its enterprise information technology (IT) infrastructure to AWS.

By leveraging AWS’s global infrastructure, advanced analytics, and machine learning technologies, the Swiss insurance company expects to provide new digital user experiences and power automation at scale.

As part of the multiyear partnership, Zurich Insurance will migrate 1,000 applications, including core insurance and SAP workloads to AWS by 2025.

Zurich Insurance aims to accelerate the development and release of new products to save about $30m a year by utilising Amazon Relational Database Service (Amazon RDS), Amazon Aurora, and AWS App Runner.

AWS App Runner is a service that enables the rapid deployment of containerised web apps and application programming interfaces (API), while Amazon Aurora is AWS’s fully managed relational database for the cloud that is compatible with MySQL and PostgreSQL.

Amazon Web Services sales, marketing, and global services senior vice president Matt Garman said: “Zurich’s focus on customers and innovation over the last 150 years is why it remains a leading insurer for more than 55 million people and businesses around the world.

“Moving their most critical business applications to AWS allows Zurich to put data at the heart of its business to automate processes, increase efficiency, and improve customer responsiveness.

“Combining Zurich’s financial expertise with AWS’s broad functionality will help the insurer continue to evolve its business to anticipate customer needs, and provide more personalised insurance products.”

Through the partnership with AWS, Zurich Insurance hopes to streamline and optimise its core business processes and better prepare for new reporting needs in 2023.

Zurich Insurance will develop a cloud-based system connecting data throughout its entire business by moving its SAP environment to AWS.

The migration of the SAP workloads will involve 20 landscapes, a collection of servers for a precise workload, and over 100 different systems, including those for human resources (HR) and finance.

Zurich Insurance group chief information and digital officer Ericson Chan said: “We want to help our retail customers lead safer and healthier lives, and bring our business customers peace of mind, by using the power of digital technologies to meet their evolving needs.

“Working with AWS will transform the way we bring solutions to market and enable us to make the most accurate and up-to-date insights available to our customers. We look forward to using the new AWS Region in Switzerland to support our regulatory reporting requirements.”
