Norway’s Telenor has partnered with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to speed up the modernisation of telecommunications with the roll out new 5G and edge services for customers.

The telecom company has extended its existing collaboration with AWS for the expansion of cloud-based core network innovation.

As part of the partnership, Telenor and AWS intend to enable more 5G and edge services for customers, by investing in joint go-to-market activities in select industries, including manufacturing, supply chain and logistics, and automotive.

The collaboration will allow Telenor to scale its cloud footprint, through demonstrating the possibilities of cloud-based resources with its existing customers.

It will also enable the Norwegian majority state-owned company to develop new services, which use the advanced and secure cloud technologies from AWS.

Telenor Group president and CEO Sigve Brekke said: “Working with AWS, we are continuing to advance and modernise the telecommunications industry—digitalising and expanding our offerings beyond connectivity.

“Together, we are building on our individual strengths and scaling secure, robust, and advanced cloud services, alongside the latest networking technology, for our customers much faster than we could ever do before.

“Our shared ambition is to use scalable and flexible building blocks from AWS to continuously raise the bar for what’s possible.”

Under the partnership, Telenor and AWS will work on innovations in the areas of 5G edge for mobile private networks (MPNs) and edge computing.

It will also enable Telenor to become a member of the AWS Partner Network.

In partnership with AWS, the company has already implemented an entire mobile core, running in the cloud, for Vimla, which is its virtual mobile network operator brand in Sweden.

Vimla is said to use a range of AWS services, including Amazon ElastiCache, AWS Lambda, AWS Transit Gateway, and others.

Telenor 5G has also enabled a network on wheels (NOW) prototype, which is powered by AWS, to equip customers with an ability to deploy autonomous private 5G network wherever it is required.
