In partnership with Elysium Space, SpaceX is undergoing a new initiative that’s out of this world. Discover how you can fire your cremated remains into deep space.

Operated by professionals with experiences in funeral directing and space operations, Elysium Space designed this comparatively affordable service.

However, their idea to send your ashes to space, although undoubtedly innovative, isn’t completely new.

Celestis Memorial Spaceflights came up with the concept in 1994.

However, their basic package started at a whopping $12,500 (£9,600).

Until recently, this service limited itself to celebrities who had the means to send their ashes farther than our earthly realm.

As such, only wealthy cultural icons such as Star Trek’s creator Gene Roddenberry have had a celestial send-off.

The same goes for Timothy Leary, a 1960s psychologist that explored the effects of psychedelic drugs on the mind.

While officials banned him from academia, Leary became a pivotal counterculture figure, and researcher into humanity’s full potential.

Today however, average consumers have the opportunity to plan their own space memorial.

Thus, people can reserve their posthumous seat on a CubeSat (a miniature satellite used for research) for $2,490 (£1,909).

The Elysium Star II memorial craft plans to take off from SpaceX’s launch pad later this year.

So far, Elysium has signed up 100 people.

Its CEO Thomas Civeit explains the entire two-year funeral procession in a statement:

“For about 2 years, our memorial spacecraft will respectfully and peacefully orbit the Earth.

Eventually, in a last poetic moment, the spacecraft will harmlessly re-enter the Earth’s atmosphere, blazing as a shooting star.”

Through this venture, SpaceX is diversifying its customer portfolio to include everyday customers, and not just the uber wealthy, and giant businesses.

Did you enjoy, ” SpaceX carries your ashes to orbit, then drops you off as a shooting star”?
