Germany’s Siemens Energy has partnered with Google Cloud to migrate its global network of data centres into the cloud.

The multi-year partnership is expected to support Siemens Energy’s digital transformation with business infrastructure, systems, and data on the cloud infrastructure.

The collaboration will also see the movement of Siemens Energy’s SAP systems into a cloud environment.

Siemens Energy will begin migrating more than 2.6 petabytes of data stored across its multiple data centres to Google Cloud, in the second half of this year.

The move will see the migration of its manufacturing, supply chain, and sensor data to the cloud.

Siemens Energy targets to complete a significant part of the data centre migrations within fifteen months.

Siemens Energy CIO Kian Mossanen said: “We searched for a partner that could not only deliver availability and scalability, but also challenge us to grow beyond our comfort zone.

“We knew that choosing Google Cloud would ensure more reliability and less downtime for our systems, which is critical in the energy industry.

“But it was also Google Cloud’s collaborative and innovative culture that made them the perfect partner, as we embark on this massive digital transformation.”

As part of the partnership, Siemens Energy will also move its SAP Enterprise Resource Planning Central Component (ERP ECC) and Supply Chain Management applications and data onto Google Cloud.

The migration is expected to provide low-latency access to SAP applications for more than 750,000 users across 84 countries.

To speed up its transition to SAP S/4HANA, Siemens Energy will also leverage RISE with SAP on Google Cloud.

In July this year, Google Cloud and SAP have expanded their partnership to allow customers to speed up their cloud migrations and business process migrations.

The partnership allowed Google Cloud to be a strategic cloud partner for the RISE with SAP offering, which is a Business Transformation as a Service provided by SAP.

With a carbon neutral cloud, matched 100% with renewable energy, Google Cloud is also expected to support Siemens Energy’s goal to become climate neutral by 2030.
