Qualcomm Technologies has acquired Cellwize Wireless Technologies, a mobile network automation and management solutions provider, for an undisclosed price.

The acquisition is expected to further expedite Qualcomm as a major player in the innovation and adoption of 5G radio access networks (RAN).

Cellwize has developed a cloudified and artificial intelligence (AI) driven RAN automation and orchestration platform called CHIME.

The platform is designed to help mobile network operators (MNOs) in speeding up deployment of 5G networks and Open RAN readiness. It is also said to enable MNOs to accelerate go-to-market and the return on investment (ROI) on network investments.

Cellwize is said to have 40 major MNOs as customers. As per its website, the company has around 800 million subscribers and has operations in 16 countries.

Earlier this year, the company launched the CHIME-Hybrid service management orchestration (SMO) solution. CHIME-Hybrid is designed to provide the tools to MNOs for managing and operating in the hybrid open radio access network (ORAN) era, as they bring in ORAN capabilities into their networks.

Cellwize former CEO Ofir Zemer, who is now Qualcomm product management vice president, said: “We are excited to join Qualcomm Technologies as we are both committed to accelerate the mission to modernise Radio Access Networks and enable mobile network operators and enterprises to fully realize and monetize their digital transformation.”

According to Qualcomm, the 5G network deployment, automation, and management software platform capabilities of Cellwize will further bolster its 5G infrastructure solutions. This will help industries in driving their digital transformation, fuel the connected intelligent edge, and underpin the growth of the cloud economy, said Qualcomm.

The combination of Cellwize’s platform with Qualcomm’s 5G RAN offerings is expected to provide a programmable solution for enabling an application ecosystem for differentiating and customising across various vertical industries.

Qualcomm senior vice president and cellular modems and infrastructure general manager Durga Malladi said: “Global mobile operators and private enterprises are deploying 5G networks at an unprecedented pace across industries with the goal of connecting everyone and everything to the cloud.

“The addition of Cellwize’s best-in-class RAN automation technologies strengthens Qualcomm Technologies’ ability to drive the development of the modern 5G network – accelerating Open RAN global adoption, cloud-based cellular infrastructure innovation and 5G private network deployments.”
