OpenAI, a US-based artificial intelligence (AI) research and deployment company, has announced the launch of its ChatGPT and Whisper application programming interfaces (APIs).

According to the AI firm, developers will now be able to integrate ChatGPT and Whisper models into their apps and products via its API.

Whisper is an automatic speech recognition (ASR) system. It is claimed to have been trained on 680,000 hours of multilingual and multitask supervised data gathered from the web.

The ASR system is said to allow transcription in various languages along with translation from those languages into English.

With the launch of the new API, developers are allowed to leverage the open-source Whisper large-v2 model with much quicker and cost-effective results.

OpenAI claims to have achieved a 90% cost reduction for its chatbot, ChatGPT, through a series of system-wide optimisations since December 2022.

Launched as a prototype in November 2022, ChatGPT leverages AI to deliver detailed responses and articulate answers across various domains of knowledge.

The ChatGPT API is priced at $0.002 per 1k tokens while Whisper API has an on-demand access price of $0.006 per minute.

OpenAI stated: “Our API runs on Azure, and with dedicated instances, developers will pay by time period for an allocation of compute infrastructure that’s reserved for serving their requests.

“Developers get full control over the instance’s load (higher load improves throughput but makes each request slower), the option to enable features such as longer context limits, and the ability to pin the model snapshot.

“Dedicated instances can make economic sense for developers running beyond ~450M tokens per day.”

In January 2023, Microsoft announced a multibillion-dollar investment in the ChatGPT developer.
