Ooredoo, a Qatari telecommunications firm, has signed a five-year partnership agreement with Ericsson to provide offshore enterprise connectivity in Qatar, aimed at modernising the oil and gas enterprise network.

The signing of the agreement took place at the ongoing Mobile World Congress 2022 in Barcelona, Spain.

Under the partnership, Ericsson will be supplying and managing the 4G network for Ooredoo’s oil and gas enterprise customers at their offshore sites to address their traffic needs.

The project will commence in the second quarter of this year.

Ooredoo deputy group CEO and Ooredoo Qatar CEO Sheikh Mohammed Bin Abdulla Al Thani said: “This exciting launch is yet more evidence to consolidate our position as an innovator and trusted provider of customised solutions to support our many industries in Qatar and further afield.

“We are committed to investing in innovation as a key part of our corporate strategy, and to finding and developing solutions for customer needs across every industry.

“Working with world-class partners such as Ericsson, we leverage our experience and their technology to ensure the products and services we offer our customers are second to none.”

Ericsson said that it will deliver 4G radio solutions from its Ericsson Radio System portfolio, which can help in the seamless shift to 5G in the future.

Its 5G-ready solutions will be used to modernise the existing communication infrastructure of enterprises. This will streamline the communication for Ooredoo’s oil and gas enterprise customers to have their traffic securely carried over the Qatari firm’s network.

Ericsson said that by using the 5G-ready solutions, Ooredoo’s oil and gas enterprise customers can build more use cases for automation in the future.

Ericsson Middle East and Africa president Fadi Pharaon said: “Today’s agreement with Ooredoo is an important step that will benefit the oil and gas industry.

“Ericsson has a strong roadmap and track-record in delivering 5G-ready solutions and we are proud to be Ooredoo’s partner to modernise the networks of the oil and gas industry. We look forward to further our collaboration with Ooredoo in the field of innovative industrial and enterprises cases in Qatar.”

The new partnership between Ericsson and Ooredoo follows the latter’s selection of the Swedish firm in October 2021 as its digital transformation partner. Ericsson has been responsible for providing business support systems (BSS) solutions to help the Qatari firm in its digital transformation journey.
