Netflix has acquired Boss Fight Entertainment, a Texas-based independent game development studio, for an undisclosed price.

Boss Fight Entertainment marks the third acquisition for the over-the-top (OTT) platform in the video game category after Night School Studio in September 2021 and Next Games earlier this month.

Boss Fight Entertainment’s team is said to have produced titles such as the Age of Empires, Star Wars: The Old Republic, and Halo Wars franchises, along with CastleVille, myVEGAS Bingo, Dungeon Boss, and Kingdom Boss!

Founded in 2013 by David Rippy (CEO), Bill Jackson (CCO), and Scott Winsett (COO), the company has studios in Austin, Texas and Seattle in Washington.

Boss Fight Entertainment founders said: “Boss Fight’s mission is to bring simple, beautiful, and fun game experiences to our players wherever they want to play.

“Netflix’s commitment to offer ad-free games as part of members’ subscriptions enables game developers like us to focus on creating delightful game play without worrying about monetisation.

“We couldn’t be more excited to join Netflix at this early stage as we continue doing what we love to do while helping to shape the future of games on Netflix together.”

According to Netflix game studios VP Amir Rahimi, the company is in the early days of creating “great game experiences” as part of the Netflix membership.

Rahimi said: “Through partnerships with developers around the world, hiring top talent, and acquisitions like this, we hope to build a world-class games studio capable of bringing a wide variety of delightful and deeply engaging original games – with no ads and no in-app purchases – to our hundreds of millions of members around the world.”

Last July, Netflix announced its intentions of moving beyond films and TV shows by foraying into the gaming sector, with an initial focus to produce games for mobile devices.

Last week, the OTT platform said that Netflix Games have been made available on Android and iOS devices. The games can be played through the existing Netflix subscription and come without any ads, fees, or in-app purchases.
