Microsoft has announced the next wave of artificial intelligence (AI) innovation with its search engine Bing and Edge browser in a move to transform search by expanding the vision and capabilities as the copilot for the web.

According to the technology major, the upgraded version of Bing will be accessible to more people by moving from a limited preview to an open preview and removing the waitlist for trial.

The next generation of AI-powered search is expected to shift from text-only search and chat to a more visual search with image and video answers.

Microsoft said that the visual answers are expected to include charts, graphs, and updated formatting of answers to help users discover information more seamlessly.

Besides, the upgraded versions will switch from single use chat or search sessions to multi-session productivity experiences with chat history and persistent chats within Edge.

Microsoft also expects to open up platform capabilities for developers and third parties to build on top of Bing to support people taking actions on their queries and completing tasks.

The US-based technology major launched the AI-powered Bing and Edge in February 2023 to provide improved search, more complete responses, a new chat experience, and the ability to produce content.

Microsoft corporate vice president and consumer chief marketing officer Yusuf Mehdi, in the company’s blog, wrote: “We launched the new Bing to bring you better search results, answers to your questions, the ability to create and compose, and with a new level of ease of use by being able to chat in natural language.

“Bing combines powerful large language models like Open AI’s GPT-4 with our immense search index for results that are current, cited and conversational – something you can’t get anywhere else but on Bing. This is fundamentally changing the way people find information.”
