Social technology company Meta Platforms has selected Kansas City in Missouri, US for its nearly one-million-square-foot data centre, which is expected to see an investment of over $800m.

The data centre, which will support up to 100 jobs, is planned to begin operations in 2024.

To be built inside the 5.5 million-square-foot Golden Plains Technology Park campus, the data center is said to be the first of its kind in Missouri.

Missouri Partnership said that it had worked with various organisations to attract Meta to select Kansas City for its new facility.

Missouri Governor Mike Parson said: “We’re proud to welcome Meta to Kansas City, Missouri, for this historic, cutting-edge development that will positively impact our state’s economy for years to come.

“The Show-Me State stands out as a rising technology hub due to our strategic location, skilled workforce, and business friendly climate. This unprecedented investment signals Missouri is open for business and that our state is a prime destination for high-tech leaders and innovators alike.”

According to the Governor, Meta selected Kansas City for the facility because of its central location, which enables it to offer enhanced network connectivity between coastal data centers.

Besides, Kansas City region provides greater security, competitive energy prices, lesser risk of natural disasters and other threats, and renewable energy options, said the Governor.

Meta’s new facility will be fully powered by renewable energy and is expected to be one of the most sustainable data centres in the world.

Meta community and economic development director Darcy Nothnagle said: “Meta is excited to call Kansas City our new home. It stands out with so much to offer – good access to infrastructure and fiber, a strong pool of talent for both construction and operations, and more than anything, great community partners.

“Meta is committed to being a good neighbour and investing in the long-term vitality of the region for years to come.”
