Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB) has entered into a 10-year partnership with Swedish telecom company Ericsson for the nationwide rollout of 5G in Malaysia.

In the initial phase, the company targets to launch Malaysia’s first 5G network in Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Cyberjaya.

As part of the partnership, Ericsson will be responsible for the delivery of Ericsson Radio System products and solutions, including Ericsson Spectrum Sharing, a software for wide-area 5G coverage.

The scope of the partnership will also cover cloud-native 5G Core and 5G Radio Access (RAN) nationwide.

With its Ericsson Operations Engine, which is a Managed Services offering, Ericsson will also handle the unique requirements of a single wholesale network.

Using AI, automation and cognitive software, the solution will help DNB improve its performance by detecting and preventing issues.

DNB CEO Ralph Marshall said: “DNB is committed to delivering the best technology and innovation opportunities for Malaysians, businesses and government to ensure that Malaysia takes its place at the forefront of the global digital economy.

“We identified Ericsson to offer the best next-generation 5G technology and professional services available to suit DNB’s specific and unique requirements.”

Ericsson will also provide operational support systems (OSS) and business support systems (BSS) solutions, as part of its partnership with DNB.

The company’s local presence and deployment capabilities are expected to contribute to DNB’s target of 80% 5G nationwide population coverage by 2024.

The deployment of the next-generation wireless cellular technology is expected to speed up Malaysia’s digital transformation and Industry 4.0.

The creation of a 5G ecosystem is also anticipated to enable the country to boost innovation in areas such as AI, augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) and automation across a range of enterprise, industry and multi-sector Internet of Things (IoT) use cases.

Recently, Singaporean telecom company Singtel has partnered with Ericsson to power its 5G SA network with 5G radio access products and cloud-native dual-mode 5G Core network solutions.
