Japanese shipping company Ocean Network Express (ONE) has chosen Google Cloud to further drive its digital transformation and data cloud strategy.

By tapping Google Cloud capabilities, the container transportation firm intends to achieve the scalability of its mission-critical SAP systems.

Employing more than 7,000 people, ONE currently serves more than 14,000 customers in 63 countries.

Before deciding on moving its on-premise infrastructure to the public cloud, the company used the SAP accounting system hosted locally in each country on its legacy cloud platform.

As part of its efforts to modernise its systems, ONE has migrated to an SAP S/4HANA enterprise resource planning (ERP) finance software hosted on Google Cloud.

Shifting to the cloud is expected to enable the company to scale its ERP systems up and down to meet changes in customer demands and data volumes.

To obtain a unified and real-time view of data across its global organisation, ONE is also carrying out the integration of its SAP system with Google Cloud’s data analytics solutions.

The container shipping company is also planning to modernise its legacy data environment with a data lake using BigQuery.

Expected to be completed in the third quarter this year, the migration is expected to allow the company to consolidate and analyse data from its SAP ERP and other data sources.

ONE senior vice president Kosuke Wada said: “Modernising our legacy infrastructure requires a strategic rethink of the way internal data is captured and processed at all levels of the company.

“By accelerating the use of data analytics to enhance operational efficiencies and predict, ONE can better meet changes in customer demands and data volumes and make business decisions faster.

“Our move to Google Cloud is a realization of a centralised and intelligent system that allows us to act on trusted and up-to-date information to shape our data cloud strategy.”

ONE is also implementing Google Workspace to enhance employee collaboration.

According to the company, a two-step verification on Google Workspace is allowing it to safeguard its employee’s accounts and company data.

Last month, US-based oilfield services company Schlumberger has chosen Google Cloud to accelerate its transition to SAP in the cloud.
