IBM has agreed to acquire BoxBoat Technologies, a US-based DevOps consultancy and enterprise Kubernetes certified service provider, for an undisclosed price.

Established in 2016, BoxBoat Technologies enables its clients in setting up containers and Kubernetes as core enablers for cloud solutions.

Based in Bethesda, Maryland, the company has been catering to Fortune 100 and government clients in modernising existing DevOps solutions and containerising workloads that are mission critical.

The company is said to offer a full suite of services that include tailored strategies for Kubernetes and enterprise container platform adoption, containerisation of applications, DevSecOps, training and enablement.

It helps enterprises in achieving their DevOps goals by guiding them on the appropriate tooling, business strategy, workflows, and processes.

BoxBoat Technologies CEO and co-founder Tim Hohman said: “We founded BoxBoat on the idea that containers and DevOps would become an industry standard with the potential to transform enterprise IT with lightning fast application deployment workflows.

“Joining IBM will allow us to realise a shared vision of helping clients innovate by successfully deploying container-based applications on-premise and to the cloud.”

According to IBM, the acquisition of BoxBoat Technologies will boost its container strategy. It will also expand the company’s portfolio of implementation services to further advance its hybrid cloud strategy and expedite the adoption of Red Hat OpenShift around the world.

IBM hybrid cloud services senior vice president John Granger said: “Our clients require a cloud architecture that allows them to operate across a traditional IT environment, private cloud and public clouds. That’s at the heart of our hybrid cloud approach.

“No cloud modernisation project can succeed without a containerisation strategy, and BoxBoat is at the forefront of container services innovation.”

BoxBoat Technologies will operate under IBM global business services’ hybrid cloud services business. It is expected to boost the capacity of IBM in addressing the growing client demand for container strategy and the critical personnel and process components needed for their transition to the cloud.

The deal, which is subject to customary closing conditions, is anticipated to close in the current quarter.

In a separate development, IBM said that it will collaborate with French IT company Atos to develop a new, highly advanced digital infrastructure for the Dutch Ministry of Defense.
