Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) has expanded its collaboration with Nokia to jointly deliver an open and competitive cloud radio access network (RAN) solution to communication service providers (CSPs) and enterprises globally.

Both parties have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in this regard.

Through the extended collaboration, HPE expects its telco servers to be available to Nokia mobile network users worldwide once the cloud RAN is deployed in the CSP network.

By bringing together Nokia’s 5G Cloud RAN software, In-Line Layer 1 accelerator card, and Cloud RAN SmartNIC with the HPE ProLiant DL110 platform, the partnership intends to focus on the integration, interoperability testing, and validation of a Nokia product solution.

Both companies have completed an end-to-end Layer 3 data call running Nokia 5G Cloud RAN software with the Nokia Layer 1 acceleration on the HPE platform.

Besides, HPE and Nokia plan to combine the latter’s Cloud RAN SmartNIC Layer 1 acceleration card with the former’s telco infrastructure portfolio to offer a seamless experience for service providers.

Nokia mobile networks president Tommi Uitto said: “The combination of our technology and expertise creates more compelling and integrated solutions that accelerate the adoption of open technologies and bring innovative solutions to the market faster.

“By collaborating with our best-in-class partners we can deliver competitive advantage to organisations embracing Cloud RAN.”

According to HPE, the collaboration will deliver high performing, competitive, and cost-effective open Cloud RAN solution to market that will enable the full potential of 5G.

HPE service providers, OEM, and telco senior vice president and general manager Phil Cutrone said: “By combining our strengths, we are able to offer a comprehensive and robust Cloud RAN solution to CSPs that drives efficiency, innovation, openness, and scale. We’re excited to work with Nokia to bring this to operators and enterprises who are embracing Cloud RAN technology.

The combined solution is expected to be available globally in Q4 2023.
