Anthropic, a California-based artificial intelligence (AI) safety and research company, has announced a partnership with Google Cloud to build AI computing systems.

Besides, Google Cloud has been selected by the AI company as its preferred cloud provider.

Anthropic has also reportedly secured an investment from Google. The investment of nearly $300m was made by Google in late 2022 for a 10% stake in the former, reported the Financial Times.

As part of the announced collaboration, Google Cloud plans to build large-scale, next-generation tensor processing unit (TPU) and graphics processing unit (GPU) clusters which Anthropic could leverage to train and deploy its advanced AI systems.

Anthropic is said to have opted for Google Cloud to benefit from the latter’s expertise in large-scale systems for machine learning.

The start-up expects to carry out AI research on the same infrastructure that drives Google Search and YouTube by utilising Google’s custom-developed machine learning systems that are built to execute computationally intensive workloads.

Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian said: “AI has evolved from academic research to become one of the biggest drivers of technological change, creating new opportunities for growth and improved services across all industries.

“Google Cloud is providing open infrastructure for the next generation of AI startups, and our partnership with Anthropic is a great example of how we’re helping users and businesses tap into the power of reliable and responsible AI.”

Founded in 2021, Anthropic has published 14 research papers to demonstrate how to develop language models that are reliable and controllable.

This year, the AI startup started to deploy its technology publicly, beginning with a language model assistant dubbed Claude.

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei said: “We’re thrilled to be able to partner with Google Cloud on training and deploying useful AI systems. We’ve been impressed with Google Cloud’s open and flexible infrastructure.

“We are excited to partner with Google to scale-up our systems in the coming months.”

In May 2022, Anthropic secured $580m in a Series B round.
