Social media giant Facebook has unveiled plans to hire 10,000 people in the European Union over the next five years to help build ‘metaverse’, a virtual reality (VR) version of the internet.

The company said that the metaverse is a new phase of interconnected virtual experiences leveraging technologies such as virtual and augmented reality.

Facebook said a blog post: “The metaverse has the potential to help unlock access to new creative, social and economic opportunities. And Europeans will be shaping it right from the start.

“This investment is a vote of confidence in the strength of the European tech industry and the potential of European tech talent.

“Europe is hugely important to Facebook. From the thousands of employees in the EU to the millions of businesses using our apps and tools every day, Europe is a big part of our success, as Facebook is invested in the success of European companies and the wider economy.”

Last month, the social media firm invested $50m in global research and programme partners for building the metaverse responsibly.

In August this year, Facebook launched a virtual collaboration tool, dubbed Horizon Workrooms, to reimagine remote collaboration. Using the company’s Oculus Quest 2 headsets, the new tool will allow users to come together to work in a virtual environment irrespective of their physical locations.

In July this year, the company created a product team to work on the metaverse. The social media firm said that the team would be part of its augmented reality and virtual reality group, Facebook Reality Labs.
