Cognizant has agreed to acquire UK-based internet of things (IoT) software engineering services provider Mobica.

The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Mobica’s services cover the entire software development cycle, with key capabilities in the development, implementation, testing, and deployment of embedded software. The company is also said to specialise in customers’ strategic internal research and development initiatives.

The firm collaborates with businesses across various sectors including aerospace, finance, semiconductors, automotive, and others to offer them access to talent and software engineering know-how across the entire technology stack.

Through the acquisition, Cognizant expects to considerably expand its IoT embedded software engineering capabilities and deliver a deeper and wider array of end-to-end support to customers to enable digital transformation.

Following the completion of the acquisition, the technology major will add about 900 people across Europe and North America, including nearly 550 engineers in Poland.

Mobica CEO Sam Kingston said: “Mobica has built a reputation for world-class IoT embedded software engineering expertise across the entire technology stack, from chip to cloud.

“The alignment we share with Cognizant from a technology, industry and client-focus standpoint represents a strong platform for continued growth in Europe and North America, and an opportunity for our talented team to grow their skills and careers.”

Mobica’s competence in three key areas namely silicon and technology platforms, connected devices and digital transformation, and automotive and intelligent mobility is anticipated to further bolster Cognizant’s client offerings.

The acquisition of Mobica expands on Cognizant’s earlier initiatives to strengthen capabilities in Eastern Europe. These include the purchases of Softvision in 2018 and Devbridge in 2021, which are said to have substantial software product engineering operations in Romania and Lithuania, respectively.

Cognizant core technologies and insights executive vice president Annadurai Elango said: “Mobica’s strong track record of delivering strategic embedded software engineering services is well-aligned to Cognizant’s Global 2000 client base and key industries, while its large presence in Poland significantly enhances our growing development teams in Eastern Europe.

“We believe combining Mobica’s expertise with Cognizant’s strong IoT and product engineering capabilities will result in enhanced digital transformation outcomes for global clients in the technology and automotive industries and beyond.”

The transaction, which is subject to conditions, is anticipated to close in February 2023.
