Amazon has unveiled a new bedside sleep tracker dubbed Halo Rise to provide insights and personalised sleep analysis.

Halo Rise, which uses built-in contactless, low-energy sensor technology, is said to quietly work in the background to track and analyse sleep.

The system is powered by machine learning to detect movement and respiration patterns to determine the various sleep stages throughout the night.

Amazon smart home and health vice president Melissa Cha said: “Quality sleep is an incredibly important factor in our overall health and well-being. In today’s busy world, getting more and better sleep is one of the areas that customers ask us about the most, which is why we’re tackling sleep head on.

“Halo Rise is designed to work intelligently in the background and give you an entirely new and effortless way to manage your sleep and achieve sleep-life harmony.”

The new bedside tracker also uses a sleep algorithm that has been trained and is said to have been validated against overnight polysomnography.

The sensors in Halo Rise continuously monitor the room’s temperature, light, and humidity levels and integrates with the Amazon Halo app to offer recommendations for improving the sleeping environment.

Halo Rise, which automatically starts the sleep session when one gets into bed, will provide a thorough sleep summary, said Amazon. This includes a graph showing time spent in all the sleep phases along with a sleep score and details about the sleep environment.

Priced at $139.99, Halo Rise will be made available for customers in the US, said Amazon, which plans to start shipping the product later this year.

Yale School of Medicine associate professor of medicine Carolyn D’Ambrosio said: “Sleep is a central pillar of good health, and the benefits of consistent, sufficient sleep are well-documented, touching on nearly every aspect of our mental and physical well-being.

“Yet research shows that one in three adults don’t get enough sleep. With its comprehensive approach, Halo Rise is leading the future of sleep technology.”
