Accenture announced a partnership agreement with satellite imagery and geospatial solutions provider Planet Labs to develop artificial intelligence (AI) powered geospatial intelligence tools for sustainability, traceable supply chain, and climate risk solutions.

The partnership is said to be in line with Accenture Ventures’ Project Spotlight initiative. It will combine the high frequency satellite imagery data of Planet Labs with Accenture’s technology expertise and a range of array of sustainability services to reduce disruption across global value chains.

Accenture and Planet Labs intend to collaborate on various sustainability and impact initiatives, including measurement, data-based climate risk assessments, and traceable supply chain strategy.

Accenture Ventures managing director Tom Lounibos said: “With its vast network of satellites, Planet offers one of the richest sources of daily, timely data about what is happening to our Earth — rich data that can yield incredibly valuable insights to help drive sustainability advancements and benefit industry and society as a whole.

“With our organisations’ shared visions and values around sustainability as a key underpinning, we believe our collaboration with Planet will yield countless opportunities to combine our strengths and innovate on behalf of new and existing shared clients.”

The timely data extracted from high-frequency satellite imagery is said to contribute significantly to various sustainability initiatives ranging from sustainable agriculture and energy transformation to end-to-end supply chain tracking and sustainable commodity sourcing.

Besides, the imagery is said to provide valuable information to assist financial services companies to identify market trends and risks related to climate change, energy resources, and availability of commodities.

It can also assist public sector defence and intelligence organisations in decision making pertaining to food security, energy security, and other mission-critical or tactical decisions.

Planet Labs operate a fleet of nearly 200 earth imaging satellites that are claimed to capture the majority of Earth’s landmass on a daily basis.

Planet Labs product and business president Kevin Weil said: “Accenture has demonstrated a deep commitment to sustainability and to helping its clients around the world utilise innovative technologies and new sources of data to help drive their sustainability efforts forward, so we view this as a very strategic collaboration.

“In addition to opportunities to collaborate with many shared clients, we believe our participation in Accenture Ventures’ Project Spotlight program will help illustrate the benefits our data can deliver to organisations across different industry sectors.”
