Prosecutors have dropped sexual assault allegations against WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange after almost a decade long investigation.

After a seven year investigation, Julian Assange is no longer under investigation over rape charges.

Assange currently lives in the Ecuadorian Embassy of London. He took up residence there five years ago to avoid facing charges in Sweden.

While he no longer faces the possibility of a trial abroad, police still want him in Britain.

As such, police officials say that Assange must still account for skipping bail in 2012.

However, his Swedish defence lawyer, Per Samuelsson, remains optimistic at the recent turn of events.

On Radio Sweden he made the following statement:

“This is a total victory for Julian Assange. He is now free to leave the embassy when he wants.

“We have won the Assange case. He is of course happy and relieved. He has been critical that it has lasted that long.”

This Friday was the last day that Swedish authorities could make a final decision about Assange to the Stockholm District Court.

Thus, Chief Marianne Ny of the Swedish Prosecution Authority has decided to abandon charges.

However, criticism has followed Ny’s handle of the Assange case.

Swedish Ex-Prosecutor Rolf Hillgren accused Ny’s handling of the case as a “disgrace” in 2015.

He argued that she should have questioned Assange must earlier in her investigation. Additionally, he believed that she showed bias throughout the enquiry.

Yet, Assange isn’t in the clear just yet.

Although Sweden has decided to drop the charges against him, British police must still acknowledge their warrant for his arrest.

They issued it in 2012 when he jumped bail.

If Assange leaves the Ecuadorian Embassy, British authorities could still arrest him.

Thus, the Metropolitan Police commented that they are “obliged to execute that warrant should he leave the embassy.”
